HRU VisionTo provide high quality community rehabilitation for individuals who have disabilities or are otherwise at a disadvantage to access employment, skills training, and community resources. We will excel at creating and supporting employment options that incorporate individual goals and promote full inclusion into the community. HRU MissionTo seek out knowledge and opportunities to the implementation of innovative pre-employment and employment services. To maximize opportunities for the personal growth and independence of disabled and disadvantaged people. To provide information and technical resources to businesses, organizations, and individuals. Letter from the Chairman of the Board and the President:IT HAS BEEN A TUMULTUOUS YEAR TO OPERATE ANY KIND OF BUSINESS regardless of where you live on the planet. No sector was immune from the economic down turn that we all are facing, and it not only cast a shadow on everyone financially but emotionally as friends, family and colleagues all around continues to lose their jobs. Although very limited, HRU had its first lay-off in our 39 year history, but the impact to the organization and the members we service were minimal, as we were we able to act quickly and decisively, drawing upon the organization's strengths to close the gaps created from the loss of state funding. Many of the strengths we drew upon were cited in our recent CARF accreditation report that resulted in yet another top level of national accreditation for all of our programs and services including the agency's governance, which is noteworthy because less than 10% of not for profits hold an accreditation in this area. A few of HRU's strengths cited included: 1) Ethical standards that are well established and shared throughout the organization, 2) Leadership that provides a supportive environment for staff members to become active partners in the organization, 3) True empowerment that results in a high rate of success for member participants, and 4) Strong financial position overseen by a well organized and prudent fiscal structure. It is building on these strengths that we were able to deliver on our program and organizational goals for this past year and believe we are well positioned to move forward and take advantage of new opportunities created by the changing market place. One of those opportunities has resulted in a joint effort between HRU and three for profit packaging supply companies to create a "complete packaging solutions" collaborative. This experiment hopes to drive business to each of the participants in a seamless delivery to joint customers, while providing work opportunities to members of our services, and early reports are favorable. Even though the state continues to cut back its funding to employment services for the disabled and disadvantaged, the demand for our services continues to rise and we continue to find innovative ways to meet those demands drawing on the strength or our staff and members and a culture of empowerment. On an individual basis, empowerment means taking control of one's life. In an environment of uncertainty, it is essential to one's well being that they believe and feel that they can control those elements within their control. HRU services are built on educating, advocating, creating opportunities and empowering its members to individually and collectively take control resulting in the previously homeless having homes and the unemployed having not only jobs but careers. Throughout HRU's 2009 annual report members that are taking control of their lives are highlighted, and their stories are what makes us real and inspires us to fulfill our mission.
