How Can I Help?

Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteers are a special group of people committed to HRU, our programs and our members. These dedicated individuals have given of themselves, providing their time and energy to help HRU make a difference in the lives of its members and the community. Some of these volunteers advocate for people with disabilities through their participation on one of our committees, such as Events, Human Rights, Friends of Forum House, Friends of Tradewinds, Friends of Star Light Center, Friends of Lighthouse or the HRU Board of Directors. In these roles, individuals contribute in their area of expertise, engage their network and support the agency and its programs to ensure opportunities and inclusion of our members within their community. Below are brief descriptions of some of the many volunteer opportunities available at HRU:

Time Commitment

Board of Directors

  • Nominated by Board and elected to two-year term
  • Exercise general executive supervision over the officers of the corporation
  • Initiate rules as deemed expedient for the advancement of the interest of the organization
  • Vote on all matters brought before the Corporation acting through its Board of Directors
  • Review organizational records and policy

2 - 3 hours per month

Events Committee

  • plan and execute the annual events of the organization including our annual stakeholder meeting and agency fundraising events
  • attends monthly meetings
  • completes event related assignments including working the event and fundraising
  • volunteer recruitment

1 - 2 Hours per Month

Human Rights Committee

  • review, monitor and investigate the activities of the program with regard to human and civil rights of the persons served by the program Members generally consist of consumers, parents, advocates, allied health professionals and an attorney or paralegal
  • members should have experience and knowledge relevant to the duties of the committee

2 hours per month

Friends Committee

  • assist in identifying methods and opportunities to promote the program positively to the local community
  • actively pursue community employment opportunities to secure greater numbers and types of supported and independent employment for members
  • assist in fundraising and offer guidance and support to enhance program effectiveness and quality
  • Friends committee members generally consist of individuals with contacts to the business community, community employers, parents of consumers, individuals with expertise in the area of public relations, marketing or fund raising and program members

1 - 2 Hours per Month

Other volunteers assist HRU in its mission by developing service options for our program members, such as housing, employment, friendship or recreation, including the use of community services and activities. Volunteers also assist in our programs providing a valuable service to our program members. We salute these devoted people for their contributions and the positive influence they have had in HRU's success.
